For various reasons, many students struggle with language arts and need extra preparation before beginning Level 1. Some have language-based learning disorders, such as dyslexia, and some simply have not stored enough language experience, through listening to and reading correct language, to be able to read and write correctly.

Building on the concepts of Andrew Pudewa’s cornerstone lecture, “Nurturing Competent Communicators,” PREP-1 students will spend the year: 1) Listening daily to high quality literature read aloud by a parent; 2) Memorizing and reciting poetry from Andrew Pudewa’s Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization; 3) Learning to make basic key word outlines from simple sources; and 4) Giving oral reports from their key word outlines.

Parents who want their student to participate in PREP-1 must agree to listen to Pudewa’s “Nurturing Competent Communicators” audio recording BEFORE REGISTERING; the download is free. They must also agree to work with their student daily, reading aloud and memorizing poetry. Lists of read-alouds and a set of copyrighted poetry memorization materials from IEW will be provided. For PREP-1 there is an extra $50 materials fee for the IEW student poetry manual and MP3 recordings, due with and in addition to the Registration fee, for a total registration fee of $222 (or $187 Early Bird discount registration fee). (6th-12th; meets every other week)
