If you have been curious about IEW classes, my new Summer IEW Prep Course would be a great one to start with! I will conduct a course of 6 class sessions beginning June 7. This is a live Zoom online course that focuses on Key Word Outlining, the foundational writing skill used in all IEW courses. The class is open to rising 6th graders and up.
All writing in all IEW classes, including mine, begins with a Key Word Outline. Key Word Outlining is a powerful pre-writing tool that frees students to write in their own words without the risk of plagiarism. It is also useful for note taking in lectures and for use in oral presentations.
CLASS SESSIONS
The six class sessions will consist of a group exercise of Key Word Outlining (kwo) a simple paragraph together. In the exercise, we will practice the 3 Rules of Key Word Outlining, learning to focus on the important information in a sentence so that it can be notated to be used later in the oral report.
At the next class students will pick the paragraph they liked the most from their homework assignment and give an oral report using their kwo.
HOMEWORK AND PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Students will complete an assignment over 4 days between each of the 6 class sessions. The homework consists of Key Word Outlining (kwo) a simple paragraph on each of the four days, having the Editor Parent review it to make sure the kwo follows the basic rules, and an oral report by the student to the parent on each of the four days using the kwo. It should not take more than 30 minutes each day if the student is focused.
COST AND SCHEDULE
The total cost for the course is $180, which is $30/class session. All materials needed for the class are included in the total cost.
The class will meet on Wednesdays at 2 PM (Eastern Time) on Zoom. There will be no class the week of July 4th.
