Last week I interviewed Tyleigh Spiller, one of my recent Level 3 graduates, about her experience of entering and winning an essay writing contest! The South Carolina Department of Education and Dominion Energy offered students the opportunity to choose and write about an inspiring African American from South Carolina.

A winner was chosen from each of South Carolina’s five regions, with Tyleigh representing the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Of the five, Tyleigh is the only homeschooler, and finds herself in company with students of some very distinguished high schools! Winners received an Apple MacBook Air, and their schools or homeschool associations were awarded $1000.

Tyleigh chose Anna DeCosta Banks. Born in 1869 in Charleston, Banks became a nurse. The tireless champion greatly influenced health care and nursing education in the Palmetto State. Banks is a great inspiration to Tyleigh, as she plans to pursue nursing as her calling.

I love to see my students succeeding in their writing endeavors beyond the classroom, and I’m so proud of Tyleigh! Enjoy her interview, and then read her award-winning essay!
